Turf in Barrie and Simcoe County
Barrie sits in Ontario's snowbelt, where cold air crossing Georgian Bay drops heavy lake-effect snow, and it's the gateway to cottage country. Those two facts shape most artificial turf in Barrie: suburban backyards in a city with long winters, and seasonal properties around Lake Simcoe, Georgian Bay and the Kawarthas whose owners would rather not spend Saturday mowing.
Snow
Turf handles snow fine. A well-built base drains meltwater and doesn't heave. What matters is how you clear it, if you clear it at all:
- Let snow sit, or clear it with a plastic shovel or a blower.
- Leave a thin layer rather than scraping down to the fibres.
- Don't use metal-edged shovels or blades, and go easy on ice-melt: sharp crystals and some chemicals can damage fibres.
- Keep snowblower augers off the turf surface.
- Don't pile driveway snow on the turf all winter; the weight compacts the infill and the melt brings grit with it.
The winter guide has more.
Sandy ground
Much of the Barrie area is on sandy, well-drained soil left by old glacial lakes and outwash plains. That suits a turf base: water drains away easily, and the installer may need less base depth than on clay. Spots of clay and wet ground do turn up, so the installer will still check.
Cottages and the shoreline
For a seasonal property, turf means arriving to a lawn that looks kept. Some things are specific to cottages:
- Lake Simcoe shoreline. The Lake Simcoe Protection Plan and the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority regulate development and site alteration near the shore, and favour natural vegetation along it. Don't turf to the water's edge without checking.
- Septic beds. Keep turf and its gravel base off the leaching bed.
- Access. Island and water-access properties need turf and stone brought by boat or barge; say so up front.
- Wildlife. Raccoons and skunks dig for grubs in real lawns. Turf on a gravel base gives them nothing to dig for.

- Pet turf.
- Putting greens at cottages and near the area's golf courses.
- Turf for indoor facilities and gyms.
Around Simcoe County
- Allandale and the north end: older Barrie neighbourhoods with established yards.
- South Barrie and Painswick: newer subdivisions with compact yards.
- Innisfil and Alcona: fast-growing lakeside communities, plus resort and cottage properties.
- Orillia: lakefront homes on Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe.
- Wasaga Beach and Collingwood: sandy Georgian Bay shoreline, cottages and ski chalets used year-round.
Barrie's growth means a lot of new-build lots in the south end, with thin topsoil and engineered grading. As elsewhere, the turf base replaces the topsoil, and the installer keeps the grading that sends water to the swales and the street.

About 10.4 days a year top 30 °C, when turf in full sun gets much hotter than grass. With 223 cm of snow a year, plan where cleared snow goes: a plastic shovel or blower, not a steel blade.

Lawn watering rules
- Lawn watering limits are always in effect in Barrie (Regulatory Matters By-law 2010-036): odd or even days by address, 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. At Level 2 lawn watering is banned. New sod or seed may be watered for 14 days after it goes in. (City of Barrie: water conservation)
Turf needs no watering apart from a rinse, while new sod needs daily water for weeks. That trade-off is in artificial turf vs sod.

Questions people ask
Can artificial turf handle Barrie's snow?
Yes. A proper base drains meltwater and doesn't heave. Clear it with a plastic shovel or a blower, or just let the snow melt.
Can I put artificial grass at my Lake Simcoe cottage?
Usually, but shoreline areas fall under the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan and conservation authority rules that favour natural vegetation near the water. Check before turfing close to the shore.
How much does artificial turf cost in Barrie?
Ontario installers publish $10–$20 per sq ft for an installed backyard, before HST. Cottages with difficult access cost more.
