Turf in Windsor-Essex

Windsor is Canada's southernmost major city, with the hottest and most humid summers in Ontario and the longest growing season. That cuts both ways for turf. Artificial turf in Windsor gets used from early spring to late fall and handles the region's dry spells without watering. It also sits in some of the province's strongest sun, and turf gets hot. Windsor's searches for artificial turf are among the highest in Ontario outside the GTA and Ottawa.

Heat

Research at Penn State's Center for Sports Surface Research has measured synthetic turf surfaces far hotter than natural grass on sunny summer days, and found that watering it cools it only briefly. In Windsor that matters most for kids, dogs and pool surrounds. Ways to plan for it:

  • Put turf where it gets afternoon shade, or add shade: a tree, a pergola, a sail.
  • Ask about lighter-coloured turfs and cooler infills; they help somewhat.
  • Keep a hose handy to cool it before use on very hot days, knowing the effect is short.
  • For dog yards, keep shade and water out, and check the surface with your hand before letting a dog lie on it.

The turf heat guide covers the research.

Flat clay and flooding

Essex County is very flat and mostly heavy clay, and Windsor has had serious basement flooding after major storms in recent years. Turf drains down through its stone base, but on flat clay the water then has to be led somewhere. The installer grades the base gently toward the street or a swale and keeps water away from the foundation. Downspouts should discharge away from the turf base or be piped past it. Published drainage upgrades run $2–$5 per sq ft.

Conservation rules

Properties along the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie and the county's many municipal drains can fall under the Essex Region Conservation Authority's regulations for site alteration. Check if you're on or near one.

Around Windsor-Essex

  • Walkerville: historic homes on older lots, close to the river.
  • South Windsor: larger lots and mature trees, where shade helps with heat.
  • Riverside and East Riverside: riverfront and suburban yards along the Detroit River.
  • Forest Glade: 1970s suburbs with established yards.
  • Tecumseh and LaSalle: newer subdivisions with compact yards.
  • Amherstburg, Kingsville and Leamington: historic river towns and the county's warmest, sunniest corner on Lake Erie.

With so many hot, sunny days, Windsor-Essex yards benefit most from planning shade before the turf goes in. A pergola or shade sail over the patio end of the yard, where people actually sit, does more than any heat-reducing product.

Windsor-Essex installers also see a lot of requests for golf simulators and putting greens, partly because the long season keeps golfers practising from March to November.

23.5 days a year above 30 °C is on the high side for Ontario, so plan shade for turf that pets or children use in July and August. 129.3 cm of snow a year and 116.3 frost nights are why the gravel base has to drain: water that sits under turf freezes and heaves it.

Lawn watering rules

  • The Windsor Utilities Commission’s By-law 96 (2023) sets no standing lawn-watering schedule. When there isn’t enough water or firefighting pressure, WUC may issue a water use restriction order, with notice, that can ban lawn watering; newly sodded or seeded lawns may be exempted or given lighter limits. (Windsor Utilities Commission: By-Law 96)

Turf needs no watering apart from a rinse, while new sod needs daily water for weeks. That trade-off is in artificial turf vs sod.
