Turf in Burlington and Milton

Milton has been one of the fastest-growing towns in Canada for two decades, and most artificial turf in Milton goes into yards in Hawthorne Village, Willmott, Ford and the newer subdivisions to the south: compact rear yards, narrow side yards, and topsoil that never quite recovered from construction. Burlington is a mix of older lakeside lots in Aldershot and downtown, 1990s suburbs in Millcroft, Headon Forest and Orchard, and estate properties up toward the escarpment.

Lot grading in new subdivisions

Each new lot in Milton was graded to an approved plan, with the ground sloping away from the house and swales carrying water between yards. On some newer homes the builder holds a grading deposit until the lot is certified. A turf install must keep the grading as approved: no raising the yard against a fence, no blocking a swale with edging, no pointing water at the neighbour. If you're within a builder's warranty or grading period, ask the builder before changing the yard.

The Niagara Escarpment

The escarpment runs right through both towns. Properties within the Niagara Escarpment Plan area can need a development permit from the Niagara Escarpment Commission for site alteration, even for work that would be routine elsewhere. A backyard turf install on an ordinary suburban lot is rarely an issue, but if your property is on the escarpment brow or in a rural area near it, check before digging.

Dogs and small yards

A small yard and a big dog don't mix with grass. Pet turf on a fast-draining base with an odour-control infill is one of the most common requests in both towns. In a subdivision lot with clay underneath, the base has to drain sideways to the swale as well as down.

  • New-build backyards that never grew in.
  • Side-yard strips between houses.
  • Dog runs.
  • Putting greens, especially near Burlington's and Milton's golf courses.
  • Turf at private schools, daycares and sports facilities, including Milton's indoor training spaces.

Watering

Halton Region runs a summer outdoor watering schedule. Turf removes most of the need to water, apart from occasional rinsing.

Around Burlington and Milton

  • Aldershot: older Burlington lots near the Royal Botanical Gardens and the bay, with mature trees.
  • Downtown and the Lakeshore: older homes on smaller lots, tighter access.
  • Millcroft: a golf course community where putting greens are a natural fit.
  • Alton Village and the Orchard: 2000s subdivisions with compact yards.
  • Old Milton: older homes in the town's historic core.
  • Campbellville: rural, on and around the escarpment, where septic beds and escarpment rules come into play.

Creeks crossing both towns, including Bronte and Sixteen Mile, are in Conservation Halton's watershed. Lots backing onto them can be regulated; check before regrading.

Milton's indoor sports and training facilities, and the many families involved in hockey, soccer and baseball, also make indoor turf and backyard practice areas common requests.

18.5 days a year above 30 °C is on the high side for Ontario, so plan shade for turf that pets or children use in July and August. 118.1 cm of snow a year and 129 frost nights are why the gravel base has to drain: water that sits under turf freezes and heaves it.

Lawn watering rules

  • Halton Region runs a tiered Outdoor Water Use Program: lawns are watered on odd or even calendar days to match the house number, and newly planted sod or seed may be watered until it is established. The level in force is posted on the Region’s page. (Halton Region: outdoor water use and restrictions)

Turf needs no watering apart from a rinse, while new sod needs daily water for weeks. That trade-off is in artificial turf vs sod.
