What is it for?

Questions people ask

How much infill does artificial grass need?

Published rates are about 1 to 2 pounds per square foot for home lawns, 2 to 3 for high-traffic and pet areas, and 3 to 5 for sports fields. A Toronto installer puts 2 to 3 pounds per square foot in a putting green. Your turf’s spec sheet gives the exact figure.

What kind of infill should I use?

Silica sand is the common choice for lawns; coated sand and zeolite are used for pet areas because they help with odour; rubber and blended infills are for sports fields. The infill guide compares them.

Do I need infill at all?

Most turf does: it holds the fibres up, weighs the turf down, protects the backing from sun, and helps it drain. A few products are sold as infill-free; follow the maker’s instructions.

How do I spread it?

With a drop spreader, in thin passes, brushing the fibres up between passes with a stiff broom or power broom so the infill falls to the backing.
