Best Artificial Turf for Dogs (2026): Backings, Infill and Prices Compared

Which artificial turf works best for dogs: knitted no-infill turf, permeable and hole-punched pet turf, and retail rolls, compared on drainage, infill, heat and price from makers’ own spec pages and Canadian retail listings.

Checked October 29, 2026 · Artificial Turf Canada

For a yard dogs use every day, the best artificial turf is one that lets urine through its whole backing, laid on a free-draining gravel base, with either no infill or an odour-control infill. Ontario installers publish $14–$22 per sq ft for installed pet turf, about $2–$5 per sq ft more than standard artificial grass.

The turf is only part of it. A pet install that smells is almost always a drainage problem: urine pooling on a backing that only drains through holes, or soaking a base that holds water. Below, four kinds of turf people buy for dogs, what their makers publish, and who each one suits.

Drainage figures are the makers’ own claims; none of the pages we read names the test behind them, so compare backings by type rather than by the number.

Backing: where the urine goes

A hole-punched backing is a solid coating with drain holes every few inches. Rain runs across it to a hole, but urine from one dog spot can sit on the backing and in the infill between holes, and that is where the ammonia smell comes from. A knitted or woven backing that drains across its whole surface lets urine pass straight down where it lands.

Under either kind, the base decides the rest: a compacted, free-draining crushed stone base that sheds water away from the house. On clay, common across much of the GTA, that base matters as much as the turf you pick.

Retail turf for a small dog patch

National retailers sell rolls labelled for pets. They’re a fraction of an installed price per square foot because they’re material only: no base, edging or labour. None publishes a drainage rate, and all are perforated or coated backings, so they suit a balcony patch or a small corner you can lift and hose, more than a whole dog run.

Infill: none, zeolite or antimicrobial sand

Plain silica sand holds urine in its gaps. Pet installs use one of three approaches instead. Some knitted pet turfs use no infill at all, which ForeverLawn argues drains and cleans better. Zeolite, a natural mineral, is sold to trap ammonia until a rinse washes it out: ZeoFill says one 40 lb bag of its OdorZorb pet infill covers up to 25 sq ft. Antimicrobial coated sand such as Envirofill, from The Motz Group, carries Microban, which the maker says cuts urine’s ammonia odour by up to 99%; it cites no study for that figure.

Ontario installers publish $1–$3 per sq ft extra for an antimicrobial infill or a deodorizing drainage layer.

Heat: shade matters more than the turf

Penn State’s Center for Sports Surface Research measured a synthetic sports turf at up to 68.7 °C on a sunny day, against 35.2 °C on natural grass nearby, with the air around 24 °C. Watering cooled it by up to 11 °C, but it was back above 49 °C within 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter. That was sports turf, not pet turf, but the lesson carries: a dog run in full sun needs shade over part of it.

How often that matters depends on where you live. Windsor averages 23.5 days a year above 30 °C; Kingston’s lakeside station averages 3.6 (Environment and Climate Change Canada normals, 1981–2010). Every city page on this site lists its own figure.

Fibre: nylon, polyethylene or polypropylene

The Motz Group’s turf guide calls nylon the strongest and most durable fibre but less soft underfoot, polyethylene soft and resilient, and polypropylene less durable and meant for low-traffic or decorative areas. The three pet turfs above all use polyethylene blades; K9Grass Classic+ blends polyethylene with nylon. For dogs that run the same line along a fence every day, ask for the fibre and face weight in writing.

Which one to pick

Pick a knitted, no-infill pet turf if several dogs share a small run, the same spot takes every pee, or it’s a dog daycare or kennel. With no infill there is nothing for urine or waste to sit in, which is the maker’s case for it. Ask for a sample: a dense pet turf looks different from a lawn turf.

Pick a permeable or hole-punched pet turf with an odour-control infill if you have one or two dogs on a bigger yard where use spreads out, and you want it to look like a lawn.

Pick a retail roll if it’s a balcony, a patio corner or a small patch you can lift, and you’ll do the work yourself. With no published drainage rate, plan to lift and rinse it rather than count on it draining.

Keep real grass if your yard is large and the dogs don’t wear tracks in it, or if your city counts turf against front-yard landscaping rules (Toronto does).

Questions people ask

What is the best artificial turf for dogs?

One whose whole backing drains, such as a knitted or woven pet turf, over a free-draining gravel base, with no infill or an odour-control infill like zeolite. A hole-punched turf works too if the base drains well and you rinse the main spot weekly in summer.

How much does pet turf cost in Ontario?

Ontario installers publish $14–$22 per sq ft installed, before HST. Pet-labelled retail rolls cost $2.71 to $7.50 per sq ft as listed at Costco, RONA and Canadian Tire on October 29, 2026, for the material only.

Do dogs need infill in artificial grass?

Not always. Some knitted pet turfs are made to be used without infill. Most other turfs need it to stay upright and drain; for dogs, use zeolite or an antimicrobial coated sand rather than plain sand.

Does pet turf get too hot?

In full summer sun, yes: Penn State measured synthetic turf far hotter than grass, and watering cooled it only briefly. Give the run shade and water, and check it with your hand on hot afternoons.

Where these prices come from

These figures are from Ontario turf installers’ and suppliers’ own published price guides (Toronto area, Mississauga, Hamilton area) and from HomeStars’ Canadian artificial grass price guide, checked October 23, 2026. We don’t name the installers: we’re a referral service and don’t promote individual businesses. They’re ranges, not quotes, in CAD before HST.
